Today I watched a documentary about Owen and Mzee, the two-year-old hippo and 130-year-old turtle who became best friends in Haller Park in Kenya. Owen, the baby hippo, after being separated from his family by the tsunami in 2004, follows Mzee the tortise all around the exhibit. The park staff are worried that Owen acts too much like a tortise, and not enough like a hippo. He moves slowly, is not aggressive, and doesn't make any hippo noises. Owen thinks he is a turtle. But who can blame him?
Working at summer camp, you are often surrounded by very gung-ho outdoorsy types. One skill that is highly coveted is the elusive no-match fire. Many have pledged their allegiance to acquiring this skill before the end of the 3 summer months, but I have yet to see it done. I've seen a chicken breast cooked in an underground oven of hot rocks, but not this. This summer, I really want to do it.
